How can we help Wildlife Rangers identify the exact location of every animal larger than 5 kilograms in a specified area in real time, in order to improve forest management and ecological restoration?

DroneWild

The solution

DroneWild is providing Forestry and Land Scotland rangers with thermal micro drones, with built in customised software and AI to aid the location of animals over 5kg when out in the field. These drones are operated by the rangers and are small enough that they can fit in a pocket. The data collected will automatically synch up to Forestry and Land Scotland's internal systems.

The Opportunity

The thermal micro drones and software designed for Forestry and Land Scotland can be used across many of the other Government agencies/environmental NGO's and by individuals. The drone can observe wildlife from afar causing minimal disturbance, making it a suitable tool for a variety of conservation and wildlife projects.

Next Steps

DroneWild plan to continuously update and develop the drone hardware and software to keep it up-to-date in a quick developing market. Tailoring drones for different purposes — for example with an optical zoom to carry out schedule 1 bird nest inspection sites from a distance.

The Team

DroneWild has been set up by husband and wife team Katie and Ben Harrower. They run a successful wildlife drone consultancy business (BH Wildlife Consultancy) that carries out landscape scale surveys across the UK and Europe gathering accurate census data that can be used to inform wildlife management and conservation decisions. Ben has worked in the forestry and wildlife sector in various roles and organisations for almost 20 years.
