How can technology help us rapidly and accurately gather and analyse stress, pests and disease data in trees and wild plants to aid early detection at national levels?

Clyde Space

The solution

Clyde Space is analysing multispectral satellite imagery to map tree health and identify areas affected by pest and disease. Areas of concern are provided as digital content that feed seamlessly into map databases, widely used in the forestry sector. This allows Tree Health Officers to focus on protecting woodland rather than spending time on general surveys.

The AAC Clyde Space satellite constellation will be used for this Space Data as a Service solution. These state-of-the-art nanosatellites will deliver high-resolution multispectral data, a method for capturing images of Earth across multiple bands, providing much more information than the three main colour bands that the human eye detects.

The Opportunity

This solution has global coverage using Clyde Space's satellite technology. The service can be exported to forestry agencies and businesses around the world.

Next Steps

The tree health maps will be created over new and larger areas to assess a broader range of pests and diseases. This will be combined with in-season cross-validation using ground surveys to ensure that quality is maintained.

The Team

Clyde Space specialises in small satellite technologies and services that enable businesses, governments and educational organisations to access high-quality, timely data from space. The team consists of experts with knowledge of satellite imaging, data engineering and geographic information systems (GIS) to provide an end-to-end solution.
